While the latest application portal closed on June 5, 2026, staying ahead of eligibility requirements and document preparation is critical for success.

Although the PTDF official application period was from April 27 to June 5, and because the deadline has passed, it will be impossible for students who did not submit an application for this cycle to create a new 206/2027 application. 

What Is the PTDF Scholarship?

This is a scholarship offered by a Federal Government agency. Its focus is to develop local skills and technology for Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.

Its In-Country Scholarship Scheme is to provide support to Nigerian students who are studying in Nigerian public universities. However, the scholarship is not for every course or at every university. PTDF publishes the courses they wish to fund, while the applicant must meet the academic and admission requirements for their level.

This is a competitive and merit-driven scholarship. The PTDF committee will consider the applicant’s academic performance, relevant qualifications, and other factors during selection.

This portal gives access to the In-Country and Overseas scholarship schemes. Also gives students guidelines on how to go about their application, plus required updates.  For the In-Country scheme, PTDF directs applicants to create an account through the portal and follow the instructions provided there. 

It is important for applicants to avoid any third party, in person or on a website, that claims to provide an application form. It is better to use the official PTDF scholarship portal instead.

Who Could Apply for the PTDF Scholarship?

There were different requirements this year for applicants who are registering for undergraduate, MSc, and PhD, as well as general conditions that applied across the application.

Applicants were required to have a  National Identification Number (NIN) and make sure the verification is completed before they can proceed.  

Also, applicants who had at one time received a PTDF scholarship were not allowed to reapply for the same category or a lower one. 

And applicants who are on a current scholarship were not allowed to apply for another. In addition, there was no scholarship application for part-time study students. 

PTDF Undergraduate Scholarship Requirements

The first requirement for undergraduates is that they need to be full-time students at a public university.

They must also be in 200 level and studying a course that has been approved by PTDF relating to oil and gas, energy or management.

These are the academic requirements :

• At least five WAEC, SSCE or NECO credits.
• English Language and Mathematics must be included.
• The results could not exceed two sittings.
• A minimum CGPA of 2.4 on a 5.0 scale or 3.00 out of 4.00.
• Completion of first-year examinations.
• A valid university admission letter.
• A signed and stamped first-year academic transcript.

PTDF made it mandatory that transcripts must be signed and stamped by the Head of Department, the Exams Officer or another authorised university official. 

The applicants should also write a statement of at least 300 words to explain why they have chosen to study the course.

PTDF MSc Scholarship Requirements

For MSc applicants, it is required to have a full-time admission letter from a public university with at least a Second-Class Lower (2:2) degree in an oil and gas-related field.

And the program they wish to take must also relate to the oil and gas or management industry.

Other requirements included:

• At least five WAEC, SSCE or NECO credits.
• English Language and Mathematics among those credits.
• Results from no more than two sittings.
• Both O-level results must precede the first degree.
• NYSC certificate or exemption letter.
• Certificate of indigeneship.
• Personal statement of at least 1,000 words.

The statement of purpose as required by PTDF is for the applicant to explain why they wish to take the program, what relevance the program will be to the industry, and its expected effect on national development.

However, the scholarship was not made available for Postgraduate applicants who were in their final year of study. 

PTDF PhD Scholarship Requirements

PhD applicants faced additional academic and research requirements.

They needed:

• Full-time admission into a public university.
• At least Second-Class Lower (2:2) in an oil and gas or management-related field.
• At least a Merit in a relevant second-degree qualification.
• Five WAEC, SSCE, or NECO credits.
• English Language and Mathematics among the credits.
• NYSC certificate or exemption letter.
• Certificate of indigeneity.
• A research area relevant to the oil and gas industry.
• A research proposal of no more than six pages.

The research proposal needs to cover the research topic, introduction, literature review, research questions, methodology, data collection method, expected outcomes, novelty, industry relevance, and references.

Documents Required for the PTDF Application

It is advised that all the required documents are well prepared by applicants before starting the online application.

Undergraduate applicants

The required documents include:

1. WAEC, SSCE or NECO results.
2. University admission letter.
3. First-year academic transcript.
4. Certificate of indigeneship.
5. Personal statement of at least 300 words.

All this together with a properly stamped transcript. 

MSc applicants

MSc candidates needed:

1. First-degree certificate or statement of results.
2. NYSC certificate or exemption letter.
3. WAEC, GCE, SSCE or NECO results.
4. University admission letter.
5. Personal statement.
6. Certificate of indigeneship.

PhD applicants

The PhD candidates also need documents similar to the postgraduate  above, together with :

1. Second-degree certificate or statement of results.
2. PhD research proposal.

PTDF makes it mandatory that postgraduate documents should be scanned clearly and uploaded in PDF format, except for the passport photograph. 

How to Apply Through the PTDF Scholarship Portal

To apply during the next scholarship cycle, follow these steps; 

Step 1: Visit the official portal

Visit the PTDF Scholarship Management Portal and select the In-Country Scholarship option that is available.

Step 2: Create an applicant account

For applicants to continue with their PTDF application, mandatory instructions are given, which require applicants to create an account and enter their details.

After which, the applicant will receive login instructions and password information to the email address they provided. 

Step 3: Verify your NIN

A valid NIN is needed before the application can proceed. However, the portal has given a warning to applicants that they should not pay again if they had done the verification before and it failed as a result because of the NIMC server issue. 

Step 4: Complete your personal information

Input all information carefully, including your personal and educational information and make sure that the names match on all submitted documents, as any inconsistencies can cause problems during verification.

Step 5: Enter your academic information

Input your university, course, academic results, and other information requested from you about your education

For Undergraduates, applicants should input academic information about their first year and also provide the required transcript.

Step 6: Upload your documents

Upload all the documents in the format and size required by the portal. Ensure you cross-check every file before you proceed. A document that is not clear, blurry, or incorrectly uploaded can weaken your chances for the scholarship.

Step 7: Complete your statement or proposal

MSc applicants should prepare their required personal statement.

There is a research-proposal template provided for PhD applicants. Applicants should ensure their proposed research matches an approved PTDF research area.

Step 8: Review the application

Before you submit, cross-check your personal information, academic records and uploaded documents to be sure you correctly entered the details.

Submit the completed form through the portal before the official deadline.

How PTDF Selects Successful Applicants

That an applicant meets the requirements does not guarantee a scholarship. This is because the program is highly competitive and merit-driven. The Selection Committee takes the 36 states into consideration and the Federal Capital Territory. 

For postgraduate applicants, PTDF considers academic merit, professional qualifications, publications where relevant, professional-body membership and the strength of the proposed study or research plan.

MSc applicants must show how their proposed study relates to the oil and gas industry and national development.
